Porcelain Care, Purchasing and Policies

Porcelain Care

The character of Porcelain. . . .

Your finished piece of Porcelain art was handbuilt with anticipation for revealing the most dramatic property of this unique clay: it’s translucence. When placed at a window or with a lamp providing back light, a magical glow emanates from the art as light travels through the clay body.

Intention and skill are applied as each original piece takes form. Several stages of intimate care are taken at each phase of the process; mindful that 10% shrinkage will occur as the clay dries. Each item is loaded into the kiln for a bisque firing.

Freely decorating is a delight! Deciding how best to show details, visualizing colors and glaze application, refining the work, and finessing a heartfelt presence are the final opportunity to engage with the piece. All pieces are hand painted. Sculptures, figurines and small treasures are minimally glazed and each bowl interior has a unique design coated with a clear glaze. The interior of vases and other water vessels are also glazed. Each piece is then fired at approximately 2300 degrees F °.

Finally, out of the kiln, pieces conveying a message of love and light, from the artist, have completed the lengthy journey from a lump of clay to the artwork you are selecting.

Is porcelain fragile? . . .

Porcelain is an extremely strong clay made from the same material as fine china. It is somewhat like glass, subject to chipping like any ceramic, if knocked against something hard.

Can I put these porcelain pieces in the dishwasher? . . .

These pieces will withstand the dishwasher if placed securely where it can’t shift or come in contact with another item, in the washing process. Another recommended method is to wash the item by hand with hot water, dish soap and a toothbrush.

Is it safe to serve food in the bowls or plates? . . .

Usually, tableware is identified and glazed with that purpose in mind. While it is safe to use handfashioned porcelain for food or drink, it is better to select pieces with less detail, as food or drink could become trapped and be difficult to remove.
